  • Gotta be Famous for Something

    Published April 23rd, 2007

I love me the Del Taco. It’s probably my favorite fast food place. If you’re not familiar with Del Taco - they have something for everyone. Their fish tacos are really good. They have a ton of meatless options. Everything is made fresh. It can be cheap as hell. And if you want a hamburger - their Double Del is fantastic. Really. It’s probably fast food’s best kept secret. Living in Santa Barbara for nearly 6 years was tough, as there is tragically no Del Taco in SB. The nearest was in Oxnard - and there were nights where I made the trip. Otherwise, it was like living in exile.

On the way back from Vegas, it finally made sense to stop and visit where the Del Taco magic all started - Barstow, CA. We didn’t go to the original one, but all the Del Tacos in Barstow are special. As great as Del Taco is - the Barstow Dels are better.

At the Barstow Del Tacos, everthing is a little bigger and a little better. The fries even taste better. Del Taco is known for their cheap tacos - but they’re so tiny you can eat 10 of them. You get mostly shell with a little meat, lettuce and cheese. Not in Barstow. Same shell, but packed full of meat and overflowing with lettuce, cheese and a tomato slice! Barstow Dels are also the only Dels on earth that sell tostadas. It’s basically everything in a regular taco, plus some beans spread on a flat shell. Good stuff. The Barstow Dels also have a few other special menu items and a larger drink selection. After ordering you get a number. Much like Carls’ Jr., at Barstow Dels your food is brought to your table. And each table has a basket with neatly organized packets of mild and del scorcho sauce.

The only downside was that the food was a little bit more expensive. But for Del Taco, I’d happily pay it if all Dels were like the Barstow Del Taco.

So now when you’re driving past Barstow, in the middle of godawfulnowhere - at least you know they do have one special thing worth stopping for.

Damn. Now I want a double del cheeseburger. Luckily, there’s a Del Taco just a mile from my apartment…
