  • Review: Stardust

    Published August 21st, 2007

Have you seen Stardust yet? Chances are, it seems, no. And that’s a mistake on your part. Everyone complains about the crap quality of movies out there, yet no one goes to see the movies that are actually based on original ideas. Do we really need YET ANOTHER remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers or Halloween? Really? Rush Hour 3? Another sequel? Another crappy comic book movie that only serves to piss everyone off? Come on people, support the good stuff!!

Stardust is good stuff. It cost $65M to make and after 2 weeks, has only raked in $20M. SUPPORT THIS MOVIE. It’s a great fantasy story. The settings are gorgeous. And the original novel was written by one of my favorite authors, Neil Gaiman. Since he had a lot of script input into this movie, it hasn’t been butchered - and that’s an excellent thing.

Should I tell you what this movie is about? I’d rather not actually - just go see it. The closest comparison everyone is making is a new “Princess Bride” but that really sells Stardust short. It’s a story on a much grander scale. More magic, more adventure. Has great wit along with the great story. I can’t recommend it enough.

See the movie. Support it. I want them to make Gaiman’s best novel (Neverwhere) into a big-budget film, and soon. That probably won’t happen unless Stardust can make some money.

We’ll be seeing more cinematic forays from Gaiman in the near future, most notably in the new Beowulf epic (Gaiman penned the script) and after a long wait, Death: The High Cost of Living.

For you anime buffs who don’t already know this (why don’t you?), Gaiman penned the english script for the excellent Princess Mononoke.

Come on folks, support people who deserve it (Gaiman) instead of the also-rans. GO SEE STARDUST. You won’t be disappointed.

    Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆

have you read the graphic novel of stardust or the novel? if you haven’t seen the actual comics with art by charles vess i would highly recommend it! i have them if you ever want to take a look.

i’m glad you liked the film, they did a good job condensing the storyline for the movie.

I totally agree. I went in with low expectations, mainly because I’d seen everything else out there.
“Stardust” is hands down the best movie of the summer. The studio must have been on crack though to release this now with minimal marketing… they should have held off til mid-November and pushed it as their big holiday tent pole.
I reminded me, genre wise, closer to Princess Bride than anything else. I can only hope its a huge hit on video… or the studio has some secret plan to launch a major campaign to back it at the last second…
