  • Do Some Research, Please

    Published May 21st, 2007

There are blogs, and then there are Blogs. I’m of the opinion that if you have your own personal blog, on your own domain, you can post whatever the hell you want. However, if you post a blog on a corporate magazine site, you should be doing a little research so that you don’t look like an idiot when you goof up. It reflects poorly on you and on your publisher. And I’m talking to you, Steve Mirsky of Scientific American.

Mirsky was “happily” drinking his cup of half-caf (I won’t even discuss this ridiculousness) when he sees a quote on the cup from an anti-evolution Intelligent Design advocate. He feels the need to knee-jerk blog about this. The quote on the cup read:

The Way I See It #224 “Darwinism’s impact on traditional social values has not been as benign as its advocates would like us to believe. Despite the efforts of its modern defenders to distance themselves from its baleful social consequences, Darwinism’s connection with eugenics, abortion and racism is a matter of historical record. And the record is not pretty.”–Dr. Jonathan Wells, biologist and author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design

Not anything I agree with. But Mirsky flies off the handle, rails against Starbucks for posting “half-baked” ideas, and comes up with some (semi-)humorous suggestions for quotes. Clearly, Mirsky is offended by Starbucks promoting Intelligent Design or whatnot. But really, they aren’t. In fact, they’ve posted quotes from both sides of the “debate” on evolution, and quotes supporting both religious and atheist viewpoints. And yes, the athiest quote so horribly offended one Michelle Incanno to the point where she ends up in the paper condemning Starbucks.

Steve Mirsky, Michelle Incanno - two hysterical people on opposite sides of the same ridiculous coin. Do a little damn research if you’re going to post on a respected magazine site. And chill out - if your coffee cup doesn’t agree with your own personal beliefs, THROW OUT THE CUP. Un-freaking-believable.

Get a grip people. And get coffee from somewhere else - since Starbucks is being pretty fair about this, if we all get offended and go somewhere else, they’ll be out of business soon.

Perhaps he was pissed off because all he wanted was to walk into a commercialized coffee shop that looks just like the next one down the block, stand silently in line with a bunch of people who more resemble drones, in unison with the rest slowly shuffle his way to the counter and order an over-priced low-quality drink with at least one meaningless addition (i.e. half-caf) in order to seem an individual.

But no. Instead his daily mind-numbing ritual was destroyed by something not of the common mindless masses.

I wonder if he gets that upset if a homeless person comes up to him and asks for change as he is exiting Starbucks.
