  • Cyberhiking in Red Rock Canyon

    Published February 26th, 2007

Sunday’s hike was off to the Santa Monica Mountains, heading for a place called Red Rock Canyon. This was a pretty good hike. We could have also done the nearby Calabasas Peak hike, but we instead chose to relax a bit for lunch on the ridgeline above the canyon. It wasn’t a real long hike or anything and there were some cool rock formations and caves to scramble around on. The only real downside to this one was you start out by dropping a long way down into the canyon. This means that at the end of the day, when you’re tired - it’s a long climb back out.

So why was this cyberhiking? Well, it wasn’t - for me anyway. We’re sitting there at the top of the ridge, eating sandwiches, taking pictures and just shooting the breeze, when another hiker enters our view along the trail. This was the only person we saw while up on the ridge. What was bizarre is that this guy was wearing khakis, a belt and a tucked in button-down collared shirt. Workplace casual kind of stuff. And he’s carrying a laptop. In his arms. Open and turned on. He sorta wandered around the ridgeline paths for a while, then headed back down the trail - laptop in his arms the whole time. I don’t have any ideas as to what the heck this guy was up to. We thought maybe GPS, but why have it on the whole time? Maybe he had a map of some sort on his computer, but again, why walk around with it on? I hope he had a good battery - we were pretty far from any plugs! Very strange.

I mean, I’m a computer nerd and all, but at least I don’t walk around in the middle of a canyon with an open laptop. This guy musta had some damn good balance - would be pretty sad if he stumbled and dropped his laptop into a ravine or something!

Anyway, you can check out the Red Rock Canyon pictures here.
