Follow-up Roundup
Published February 14th, 2007A couple of links this morning that relate to some previous posts:
- A while ago I addressed the perception that Barack Obama wasn’t black enough. As it turns out, some pundits (*cough*Fox News*cough*) feel he is too black. The guy can’t catch a break! Well, ever the font of wisdom, The Daily Show addresses the Obama Question.
- Very recently, I addressed the issue of diamonds and the corrupt business of mining and selling them. In case you missed it, I abhor pretty much the entire mined diamond industry. One of the major points was that diamonds just aren’t valuable - their price is artificially inflated. This is evident if you ever try to sell a diamond. Well, some people found out this fact the hard way, but one man decided to do something about it. After being offered 30% of what he paid for an engagement ring, a man has started an internet site where individuals can re-sell their unwanted diamond engagement rings to other consumers. It’s win-win here, as the seller gets more and the buyer pays less.
Happy Wednesday.
Well, if you post about a subject twice, that definitely means we get to bite. I’ll take the first bullet point. You have asked us not to politically nitpick before, but this isn’t one of those politically reflective entries.
The reason to question the blackness of Obama is that there might be black people who watch FNC, and they say FNC wants Republicans to win. So why switch from suggesting he’s not black enough to too black? Either he has limited chameleon powers and wants to make the media look bad, or he has superchameleon powers but his strategists have advised him not to use them until closer to 2008. On the latter point, I would say if green, orange, and purple overlords are welcomed on earth, then he’ll use them.
Or make-up is going to be discussed in great detail these campaign years… OR… more seriously, they can assess the reactions to each suggestion and aren’t going to stick to one through the tell-us-what-to-think channels until they know which one is more effective.
I am trying to imagine black people accepting from non-black journalists that Barack Obama isn’t black enough. The assessments are absolutely fair game if he ever makes it an issue, but who wants to be the non-black journalist who has to flip and/or flop on this non-issue? What Would Oprah Do? Oh and Geraldo. The other day, I saw him do that move where you kiss your fingers and blow people a kiss off your peace sign, like a rapper.
The real question is whether he has won this award.
That CNN article, talking about the auctioning of unwanted engagement rings, doesn’t have a single link to the website. That’s just lame.
