  • A Love Letter

    Published February 3rd, 2007

My RSS feed list is ridiculous. I won’t lie and say I read every post title of every feed, but I probably look at around 70% of them. And I read the post of far, far too many of those. I am an infovore. I’m currently at 119 subscriptions. I love RSS. My bookmarks list has become sorta like a dusty bin of encyclopedias, forgotten since I first logged onto the internet.

There is some overlap in the feeds, but there are also some metafeeds that cover sometimes dozens of newspapers and blogs. It’s downright ridiculous. Often, yes, my eyes just glaze over and I devour what’s in front of me like an infozombie, completely losing all emotions and higher brain functions aside from the desire for more information.

Among those 119 feeds are some that I find gems of posts once in a while. Others I read as a staple, they’re the bread and butter of my infomeals. A couple I have personal connection with, like Icyshard. But there are a few feeds that I actually get excited about when I see they have new posts. Like, really excited. They are the favorite desserts of my infogluttony.

One feed is The Comics Curmudgeon. I love you, comics curmudgeon. There is no greater snark worth reading on the internet. All my life I have read the newspaper funnies, avoiding the dreck like Mark Trail, Mary Worth and Apartment 3-G. Living in horror that I might read The Family Circle and have no one to share my utter horror. But you, you have opened my eyes to the true funnies. It’s not what is being said in the panels, it’s what we can say about them. Thank you. I can never read the funnies pages with the same eyes again.

On the other spectrum of things is a little blog called Centauri Dreams. I love you, Centuari Dreams. I consider this to be one of the absolute best science blogs. I can’t get enough of it. Look, I’m a geek, everyone knows it. Since I was a kid I’ve always loved astronomy and astrophysics and all things galactic. I read books on stars and solar systems, black holes and gravity wells. I dream to get off this planet, I don’t dare to dream of leaving the solar system. This blog does, and despite my ridiculous mental galactopedia, compared to the average person out there, Centauri Dreams never fails in teaching me something new and amazing about the universe. Very, very few places can consistently teach me something new about something I absolutely love. So thank you, Centauri Dreams - I can’t wait til my RSS reader says you have a new post.

All I can say is, it’s all about the beavers! I LOVE Comics Curmudgeon as well! Now I know what I was missing when I skipped all those crappy comics as a kid. :-)

Hehe thanks for the plug, and I am going to also assume that my feed is one of those “few feeds that [you] actually get excited about when [you] see they have new posts.” ;-)

    Oh and nice analogies, infosaurus!

RSS is great. You’ve got me hooked on Google reader now, although I have slightly fewer feeds than you (11). However, one thing I dislike in feeds are folds, but maybe its just me.
